Black Adam (2022)

Synopsis

DC isn’t doing very well with its comic universe. While Marvel serves up fans with several movies and series a year, its main rival doesn’t seem to know which way to go. They want to restart their main universe a bit, but at the same time they haven’t completely cut themselves off from Snyder’s remains, and the better parts of Joker and Batman are definitely outside the DCEU. And now the long-awaited Black Adam bursts in with a loud bang. The anti-hero, whose solo performance had Hollywood star Dwayne Johnson trembling for many years, and during interviews he did not spare talk about a dark character or the beginning of a new DC chapter. But after watching the film, it is clear that the comic book stable is not only standing still but rather sadly starting to spin in a circle.

As you probably know, our new comic badass has a lot in common with Shazam! Five thousand years ago, the gods chose him as the chosen one, who gave him supernatural abilities that made him the most powerful person on the planet. However, after a tragic clash with the then-tyrannical ruler, Adam was imprisoned for thousands of years. It is only now that he wakes up again in the city of Kahndaq and immediately comes into conflict with the Intergang criminal group that rules here. And since the comic book, Tough doesn’t exactly solve conflicts with gloves and usually someone dies in the process, the superhero team Justice Society of America arrives on the scene with leader Hawkman, veteran Dr. Fate, and the rookies Atom Smasher and Cyclone.

Black Adam may have been a bit dark in the trailers, but here, perhaps, no one tries to hide for a minute that they are making a straightforward, dull, and routine comic book aimed at an audience that won’t even have a citizen’s card for a few years, and in which someone still has to fight. And the result is practically non-stop action and destruction, in which the digi characters have to constantly fight, rush and, of course, look for a powerful MacGuffin. The action is not spared here, director Jaume Collet-Serra tries to keep the pedal to the floor with the pace, which is helped by a properly catchy soundtrack. Even so, this whole tinsel thing doesn’t work very well. Not only do the action and digital throws here show nothing world-shattering, and towards the end they start to kill a little with their constant flashing and colors, but they also try in vain to cover up how empty a blockbuster it is.

I can’t even remember the last time I felt like the script had to be 10 pages at the most. Here, the screenwriters didn’t get ahead and the story here only consists of constant bickering between Black Adam, the superhero team, and chasing down the villains. When you start talking here, it seems that the authors do not know other words than hero, champion, and fate. In addition to the plot and dialogues, they also completely neglected the characters, who in most cases you will learn nothing about and are one-dimensional figures that you will soon forget. Dwayne Johnson plays perhaps even more on autopilot than usual this time and is lackluster as the main driver. However, the script does not make the situation easier for him twice, his line is only a parade of clichés seen several times, so he has no choice but to look angry or sad.

In the case of the Justice Society of America, it can be seen that the creative team had likable actors in stock, and with a little effort, a relatively strong and interesting team could be created. But the word effort is probably a dirty word for authors. Pierce Brosnan is enjoying his return to big movies and Aldis Hodge is a convincing lead, but both could have been even more expressive in their parts if the script had at least given them some material. Atom Smasher is so stupid it’s funny. Even so, it could have been a character far more appreciated by the audience. And Cyclone is cute, but she could have shown more than just doing the same spin ten times. Here, the creators simply get by with a little, and it doesn’t bother them much.

Serra then definitively became Rock’s day laborer and directing routine, who although at first glance fulfills the producer’s assignment for a comic strip, but at the same time films it in the most sterile spirit without a single fresh idea or attempt to push the genre a little further. On the contrary, it rather backs down, because it partially returns to Snyder’s stylization full of slow motion and digital coloring pages, only this time it’s more yellow and it doesn’t look so mature. On the contrary, when in the burnt-out finale Adam’s childhood partner with a skateboard starts to incite the city against computer monsters with the help of pathetic slogans, I was afraid if I had gone back in time 20 years.

The hopes of some fans that Black Adam could kick the DC universe in a fresh new direction were laughable. This is the comic book of the most consumer grain, for which the producers wanted nothing more than to line their pockets with a genre book with Rock. Yes, sometimes it hits effectively, you’ll find a joke to laugh at, and thanks to the brisk pace, things will go relatively smoothly. But just as quickly, the image escapes from your head. Here it was nothing more than making the simplest pictures, where moviegoers can eat popcorn in peace. The studio will probably achieve this simple goal in its way. The question is whether DC is worth making such empty and quick-fire genre movies instead of finally trying to move in a different direction.
