Synopsis
Whenever I write about a children’s film, I’m a little nervous knowing that I’m not the target audience. And unlike other films primarily intended for other types of viewers, it is quite difficult to estimate the target audience for this particular one. However, I was lucky at Lyle Lyle Crocodile, there were several dozen children plus and minus the first grade of elementary school in the hall. In 107 minutes, I heard two laughs from their chatter, once possibly astonishment, and once a 100% expression of fear.
Well, I’m not surprised at all, because Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile doesn’t offer much to the audience – young and old. The adaptation of the popular book revolves around a variety of artists Hector P. Valenti who finds a small singing crocodile in a pet store. But when their first performance together doesn’t work out, Hector disappears for a few months, leaving his reptilian sidekick alone. Lyle is hiding in the attic of the New York house where the Primms move in – the typical family that needs some reason to bond a little. And that reason will probably be a two-and-a-half-meter-tall crocodile.
Lyle Lyle Crocodile is not a very original spectacle, which would not matter. It is, after all, a movie for nerds, and it pretty clearly serves them a simple story with some songs, cuteness, tension, humor, and lessons. So far so good. But he serves them all rather lazily. Josh Gordon and Will Peck made Blades of Glory with Will Ferrell and Office Christmas Party, which are not major comedies, but they certainly weren’t boring. However, their novelty is not a very imaginative piece and it can be seen on practically everything.
The story itself about a crocodile that finds a new family and then has to overcome some difficulties together is artificially stretched to an hour and three-quarters by the fact that Lyle gradually “corrects” all the heroes. Of course, the relationship with little Josh, who is afraid of everything in New York, is what he wants, but as soon as Lyle has finished Josh, his mother finds him, and the crocodile shows him that you don’t have to follow instructions in the kitchen and that it’s good to cook make a fool of yourself, or load leftovers from the trash can. And mom is happy. Well, then the crocodile discovers the father, and Lyle helps him gain confidence and become a better teacher. Although all this is interspersed with clashes with an annoying neighbor and the return of Hector (of course, he also improves), in reality, the same thing happens three times in Shawn Crocodile. Someone discovers Lyle and is afraid of him, Lyle turns out to be a nice guy, then they do some bullshit together and are buddies. And then two or three more times. No one tried here.
And he didn’t try anywhere else either. Lyle himself looks incredibly sloppy and fifteen years ago he would have seemed strange. But let it be, the kids will somehow try it, because in addition to fun – even if there isn’t much of it in the end – a lot of great songs await them. The songs are there, unfortunately, the main one is played about six times and it is impossible to say that it would be fundamentally captivating or entertaining.
