Synopsis

It is difficult to put into words the full range of emotions that At All Costs evokes , because the director, in the course of a calm, slow narrative, is able to imperceptibly reach the most hidden layers of feelings and bring them to the surface. This is the pinnacle of filmmaking, and Eastwood has reached that pinnacle with his latest film.

The starting of Million Dollar Baby is simple, one might even say trivial. The main character is boxing trainer Frankie Dunn, played by Clint himself, who, despite his undoubted talent, has never achieved fame or money. The only real ace of his team is Big Willie, a powerful black boxer whom Frankie, for reasons only known to himself, still does not want to allow to fight for the championship. Frankie is approached by a girl from a remote village, Maggie Fitzgerald, who would like him to lead her. Frankie refuses – he doesn’t train girls, and he doesn’t see much chance for Maggie in the ring. However, the girl is stubborn and does not intend to give up, in which she is quietly seconded by Scrap – a former boxer employed as a cleaner, whose career ended when he lost an eye during a fight. Surprised by Maggie’s determination, Frank finally gives in and decides to pursue her career.

The plot of At All Costs, in its dry form, does not bode well for the sensational effect achieved by the director in the finale. The essence of the impact of At All Costs are semitones. Information about each character is dosed gradually, thanks to which we slowly and painstakingly build a picture of their character, and even then this detailed analysis falls apart. You could say that, as befits a film centered around boxing, we go through subsequent rounds, gaining points, and then suddenly a knockout knocks us out. So first, Frankie. We observe it from the perspective of the narrator of the story – Eddie “Scrap”. A man who obsessively shrinks from taking risks. Tormented by guilt for the negligence he once committed. A father who was separated from his daughter by some unknown, dramatic conflict. A regular mass-goer who finds no relief in faith due to constant doubts and rationalizations. These successively presented clues do not bring the viewer any closer to establishing some vision of Frankie. For most of the film, it’s hard to figure out what’s inside him, what he’s really like, what he’s capable of.

Maggie, on the other hand, is thirty-one years old – much too old for a beginner player – comes from a small village, from a toxic family, and, as she puts it, she spent most of her life washing pots and waiting tables. Boxing is her passion – she expresses herself in it, or perhaps more precisely – it is only thanks to it that she feels alive. To achieve his goal, he denies himself everything, practices furiously, all day and night, paying no attention to pain, humiliation and obstacles, without giving in to doubt. How he endures the mentally difficult process of preparing for the first fight, what he thinks, what he experiences – this is again something we don’t know. The total focus on one thread – exercises and training – suggests that they are the center of Maggie’s life, that nothing else matters. This will turn out to be more important than you might initially think.

And finally, the relationship between these two, which begins as a boss and his apprentice, and develops into something much deeper. Since neither of them has anyone else in the world, they rely on each other completely. They are as close as possible. Frankie replaces Maggie’s deceased father, Maggie takes the place of the daughter with whom Frankie has lost contact.
When the knockout occurs – only then does the viewer realize what path he has been led to. Masterful manipulation of emotions comes to light. We already know what the source of Frankie’s concerns was, we know why “everything is wrong in boxing.” Everything suddenly takes on a new meaning, everything is put in the right light. This realization hits completely unexpectedly. We are witnesses of a very beautiful and very painful truth. At the same time cruel and completely obvious. The director led us in such a way that we are unable to make an assessment. Regardless of your beliefs.

Million Dollar Baby is a film that will not let you forget about it. The emotions it arouses remain with us long after the screening. Emotions and, consequently, reflections, both on the essence of determination, persistence, climbing to the top, overcoming limitations and achieving victory – and on the meaning of the word ” Mo Cuishle ” in the widest possible dimension. Reflection on what sacrifice and choice are, on the limits of responsibility, on the purposefulness of human actions and on whether there is a limit beyond which there is nothing, and to what extent we have the right to decide that this limit has been reached.is a film that will not let you forget about it. Clint Eastwood , excellent as the director of Million Dollar Baby , is also its biggest star. While playing the role of Frankie Dunn, he achieved full acting maturity. He is not afraid of being old, ugly or weak. In his pain, in his inhibitions, in his fears, he is piercingly honest. Freeman’s calm and calm performance is a counterbalance to Eastwood’s role, serving as a background and at the same time complementing it. The scenes with both of them are a real battle at the top. These short dialogues convey the most content – not a single word or gesture is missed or unnecessary. Hilary Swank is in no way inferior to these experienced duo, proving conclusively that her Oscar-winning performance in No Time for Tears was not the limit of her abilities.

By all means, this is not a picture that is easy or pleasant to look at. It doesn’t encourage you to come back to it quickly. It leaves behind a feeling of sadness, regret, depression and many questions of the kind that require answers throughout one’s life. However, you have to see this picture for yourself to feel for yourself the impact the director has achieved. Clint Eastwood addresses the viewer as an artist – and as a person. And this is a call to which it is impossible to remain indifferent.
