Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022)

Synopsis

Studio DreamWorks Animation gave the world a whole series of strange but memorable heroes – from Ant-Z to Toothless to Mimi the boss. But I dare say that the most distinctive character was Shrek, the ugly ogre from the stinking swamps who made it to a pop culture icon and a billion dollar franchise. On his way to commercial heights, he acquired quite a decent ensemble of quirky sidekicks, including Puss in Boots played by the vivacious Antonio Banderas. His popularity even earned him his own film in 2011, which did not lose at the box office, however, he did not follow up on the success of the main Shrek saga. That’s why the plans for the second one dragged on until 2022, when the Universal studio decided to send him on a mission again. This time (probably) the very last one.

The cat ran out of lives. Of the original nine, this mustachioed handsome man in riding boots with an insatiable hunger for adventure and high percentage cream was the very last one left. And although he is a living legend and an intrepid hero without fear or shame, who laughs in the face of death, the Death Eater is already sharpening his scythe (actually battle scythes, but it will work out anyway). Faced with his own end, he has no choice but to resign and go into cat retirement. But the life of an ordinary cat in a shelter for run-of-the-mill kittens is not the right one for the animated hero. When he learns from a gang of criminals played by Goldilocks and the Three Bears that there is a map to a magic star that grants any wish, he doesn’t hesitate to pick up his shoes again, which he had hung on a nail in the meantime.

Of course, the journey to the star will be complicated by a wandering chihuahua with an open heart, a kind of arch-villain from a children’s nursery rhyme equipped with a whole arsenal of fairy-tale objects and, last but not least, thanks to an old acquaintance Kitty Silkpaw, who has unsettled accounts from the common past with the Cat. If this all sounds crazy to you, it is. Puss in Boots continues the established trend of a wild interweaving of fairy tales and pop culture references, and in fact, the viewer would feel deprived if this were not the case. Almost every scene contains a joke, a wink at the viewer or an easter egg (Excalibur, Cinderella’s slipper and an endless number of others, including a piano performance of “Skoda lásky” by the Czech composer Jaromír Vejvoda, which will warm our hearts). And when you run out of links, here’s a whole catalog of jokes and pranks about cats. Fortunately, the established plot skeleton keeps all the story quirks in place, and thanks to the fast-moving plot, you don’t even have to look at your watch. The approximately 100-minute footage is just enough for this open-ended fooling around, including the final lesson to live life to the fullest and not dream of magical stars. Thumbs up for me.

Antonio Banderas once again stars in the lead role, whose portrayal of the slightly arrogant Puss in Boots you just have to love. His fateful feline love was repeated by Salma Hayek, while the return of her snarky and snarky Kitty is one of the mottos of the entire film. Their mutual bickering and fights are very nice. Dog lovers will enjoy the lovable wandering chihuahua with the voice of Harvey Guillén, and Goldilocks played by Florence Pugh and her gang of criminal bears led by Ray Winston will also be delighted. But since most of you will probably only hear the dubbed version, you can skip this paragraph.

Play the trailerIn conclusion, it is still necessary to mention (and at the same time praise) the animation, which deviated from the typical “Shrek” 3D style and drew inspiration from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. DreamWorks already touched on this in Zlouny and here they turned it into a stylized spectacle reminiscent of something between 3D and a fairy-tale cartoon story with anime elements. It’s refreshing and helps break the animation stereotype of recent decades. Another thumbs up. In short, the new Puss in Boots has done well, and although this time it will probably be even weaker in terms of sales than last time, Shrek’s friend is saying goodbye in style and you should not miss it.
