Synopsis

In the last half-decade, Zdeněk Troška famously returned to his fairy-tale roots, which was appreciated by the viewers, who had been tortured for a long time by the series Kamenák and Babovresky.. They represented an extremely undemanding spectacle that chewed over traditional fairy-tale motifs without much invention, and the fairly decent audio-visual then pushed the presented boredom somewhere into the average of televised fairy tales; which is not a bad result for Zdenek Troška’s filmography. Where to place the new Enchanted Feather in this spectacle of horrors?

Young Aninka lives on a farm with two older sisters, whom for some reason she has to serve without reluctance. Still, he keeps his spirits high, spinning and laughing. Then, quite inexplicably and very unhygienic, he kisses a dick that fell out of a flying raven. He thus summons the prince, cursed in the form of a bird. They fall in love in an instant, and when the sisters want Aninka‘s love, the squeamishly optimistic girl sets off into the world—presumably to solve the prince’s human-bird identity troubles. On the way, she meets a cranky waterman who helps her with everything.

It turns out that Troška does know genre figures, but even after several decades, he can’t (or doesn’t want to) use them in an inventive way. And so the main character continuously completes tasks in which intelligence or a friend helps her, but everything happens so boringly that the viewer remembers with admiration Christmas fairy tales, where at least some effort can be seen. Here, existing fairy tales are not only copied Cinderella but even mentioned several times – we live in a world where the characters know stories about Snow White & the Huntsman, The Gingerbread House, and Frosty the Snowman. However, this knowledge does not prevent them from idiotic behavior, which is surprising.

As well was inconsistent language containing several archaisms, but given that the narrative in verse was threatened, the result is still a win (read “to survive”). However, the empty dialogues and lengthy shots of the summer landscape. However, the landscape exteriors deserve the fact that, at least in this respect, the fairy tale looks a bit better than the sleazy TV productions. However, the difference is barely noticeable.

In the role of the beautiful villain, we again see Troška’s young favorite Sara Sandeva, whom I would finally like to participate in at least an average domestic production. On the other hand, Lukáš Pavlásek is surprisingly unobtrusive, keeping his Vodnik creation relatively under control and being the only one who at least tries to move the story forward. In the lead role, nineteen-year-old Anastasia Chocholatá, who we saw in Mádl’s debut To See the Sea is not very sympathetic. Petr Urban in the role of the cursed prince is similarly pleasantly unglamorous, traditionally dressed up a little with a massive curly wig.

Both of them bring to mind Andrea Černá and Radek Valenta from Princess of the Mill, their appearance and the overall effort to create a similarly successful fairytale relationship is undeniable. But times have moved on in a quarter of a century, and today’s heroines have to do more than just spin around their axis with giggles. It freezes that the central heroes go through almost no personal development, which culminates in an conclusion, which after an hour and a half of watching the film is downright annoying. But by that time, the viewer is already bored and can only hope that their children have packed up and gone straight to bed. This unimaginative twisting of fairy-tale motifs is for nothing else.
