Synopsis
Couples in love will definitely be happy to see “Hide and Seek” because there are several scenes in which a terrified girl will hold her boyfriend’s hand tightly. The film will also appeal to viewers who are not familiar with the genre, because for them the super-surprising ending will be the pinnacle of innovation and originality. The least demanding, pop-corn audience should also be satisfied, for whom a trace amount of blood will be rewarded with an interesting dose of tension. But… what will the rest get?
Other movie fans will receive a pseudo-psychological story with a thrill and a surprising, true, but unrevealing ending, which could already be seen in two other productions (and, interestingly, with a similar plot structure, similar place of action and similar way of creating characters as in the film ” Hide and Seek” The beginning is really promising – the wife of the renowned psychologist David Calloway commits suicide. The doctor, seeing how difficult his daughter Emily’s condition is, decides to move with her to a calm, quiet town to help her return to normal life in a new environment, away from unpleasant memories. The situation becomes more complicated when the girl starts talking about her imaginary friend – Charlie (noticing Tony from ” The Shining “?). The initially innocent children’s game begins to take an increasingly drastic turn: the imaginary friend becomes more and more bold with each passing moment, resorting to terrifying acts, and finally – begins to take shape as real as possible.
Interesting, right? Of course, but let’s not forget that behind it is a large studio that cannot afford to overwork the viewer intellectually, (because how unfavorably it later appears in the Box-Office ranking!) a young director-craftsman and a debuting screenwriter who, as he himself he admitted in one of the interviews – he wanted to create a truly terrifying scenario. He achieved his primary goal… and nothing more. “Power of Fear” has absolutely NOTHING to offer, apart from a considerable dose of tension. Because although the acting looks good – the main violin is played by DeNiro and the small but very talented Dakota Fanning, and in the background the beautiful Famke Janssen and Elizabeth Shue – all the efforts of this – no matter how you look at it – star cast seem to be pointless. The story turns out to be shallow, unintriguing (although the idea has potential) and noncommittal.

It is worth adding here that there are two versions of the ending and, if you believe the opinions of Internet users, both of them can be seen in Polish cinemas (unfortunately randomly 😉 ). The first version presents a conversation between Emily and Katherine (a psychologist, the girl’s friend), after which we learn that our heroine is recovering in a psychiatric hospital. In the second one, the Doctor’s daughter and Katherine live together in New York. In the last shot we see a picture of Emily with two heads. The conclusions are obvious… Interesting, quite ambiguous ending.
Without a doubt, the Power of Fear is truly terrifying. Interesting, atmospheric music, atmospheric cinematography, inventive opening credits (presented in this form for a reason) and strong, although not memorable scenes, supported by decent acting. And we are afraid – we wait in uncertainty for the next scene, for new facts, for hints to solve the mystery, we jump in the chair to the accompaniment of intense music, in the meantime reaching with a trembling hand to the bag of popcorn.
Yes, I can recommend this movie – although it’s just casual, pure entertainment for an hour and a half with a piece. After this time, however,loses its value and becomes just another average scare that the viewer leaves satisfied with, but after a few days he or she can hardly remember even its title. With such actors, with such an intelligent idea, with such technical possibilities, such an approach to the matter is more frightening than the scariest horror movie…
